The multinational
Danone
has announced that it will replace the expiration date of 80% of its products in
Spain
with one of preferential consumption, so that buyers do not throw away food that is in good condition despite having exceeded the optimal date for its consumption.
This was announced at a press conference by the vice president of dairy sales and the general director of Danone Spain,
Cédric Pantaleón
and
Paolo Tafuri
, respectively, who have detailed that with the new labeling, icons will be added as a guide to verify that the product it is still suitable for consumption outside the preferred consumption date.
The preferred consumption date indicates how long a product maintains its taste and nutritional qualities intact, but it does not mean that outside this limit the food is not of quality, since it may only have small variations in texture or color.
The head of awareness projects for
Too Good To Go
, an application to recover non-marketable food in good condition,
Helena Calvo
, explained at the press conference that people "should learn to act against food that has passed the preferential consumption ". "Look, smell and taste, with our senses we can know if a food is good, and it is important that we do not throw away those products in good condition, because many resources are spent in getting food to our refrigerators," Calvo claimed.
The director of Public Affairs of
Danone Spain
,
Laia Mas
, for her part, explained that in 2019 931 million tons of food were thrown away worldwide, which entails a very large economic, social and environmental impact and "It requires making a change in our consumption."
Paolo Tafuri
has expressed that by improving the products, the nutritional and gastronomic qualities of the food can be maintained, and offer good quality beyond the date of preferential consumption.
The CEO of Danone Spain hopes that other brands will also join the change in labeling, and that the meaning of the best before date will be more common among consumers.
