The protection schemes for companies and workers derived from the health crisis will last until September 30, four more months after their expiration date of May 31.

The Government has proposed this new extension period to the social agents in the meeting it has held this morning to design the new aid scheme, as reported by this newspaper last Tuesday.

Negotiations will continue in the coming weeks to define the conditions under which companies and workers will be able to benefit from these grants, which currently benefit just over 630,000 workers whose companies cannot sustain their activity due to mobility restrictions and schedules derived from the health crisis. The Government's purpose is to propose

a de-escalation of the aid conditions

as the economic recovery expected for the second half of the year advances. Basically, these aids consist of exemptions to the contributions paid by companies for workers on the payroll to Social Security and in the payment of up to 70% of the contribution base to workers who see their employment suspended.

The idea within the Executive is to extend the aid beyond September 30 if necessary with the December 31 limit. By that time,

a replacement scheme for the current one should be agreed to

convert ERTE into permanent flexibility mechanisms for job adjustments in companies in difficulty. Although the Government is very satisfied with the result that the ERTEs have had in curbing a wave of layoffs that in the last year would have raised the unemployment rate to close to 20%, it is also very aware of the enormous economic cost that it has caused. represented the measure, with about 40,000 million euros spent in the last year.

Everything is yet to be defined in the design of the new ERTE, but the Government has already advanced in its proposals sent to Brussels that the new mechanism will be financed through a new finalist fund that will be nourished by the contributions that workers and companies make to the Service State Public Employment through the unemployment contribution.

The Government will use European funds to fulfill its obligations.

Today, ERTEs mainly affect sectors such as hotels, accommodation and commerce, both wholesale and retail.

Its territorial distribution shows that, by volume, it mainly affects Catalonia, Madrid, Andalusia and the Canary Islands.

Although the state of alarm expires next Sunday, the current scheme is in effect until May 31
