government is pushing ahead with a plan to underground a part of the metropolitan area of the Gyeongbu Expressway, which is a regularly congested section.

We are planning to create an additional road 40m below the highway, and reporter Jang Hoon-gyeong covered the plan of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport.

<Reporter> The

section of the Gyeongbu Expressway in the metropolitan area, especially from the Hannam Intersection to the Yangjae Intersection, is congested and the average speed on weekdays is only 30 km/h.

The name of the expressway is colorless, but it has been confirmed that the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is promoting the undergroundization of some sections in order to resolve this congestion.

[Noh, Hyeong-wook/Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport candidates: We are reviewing the three-dimensional expansion of the Dongtan to Gangnam section in the construction plan for the second highway currently being promoted.]

Three-dimensional expansion means an underground tunnel.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is considering a plan to create an underground road under the existing expressway for a 20km section from Giheung Nadeulmok to the vicinity of Pangyo, and to connect it with Yeongdong-daero, Gangnam, Seoul by creating an underground road near Pangyo.

In this case, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport expects that even if the Hannam Bridge, which has been promoted by Seocho-gu, will not be made underground, the traffic volume will be dispersed and congestion in the regular section will be improved.

The problem is cost and safety.

There is no compensation fee because the tunnel is built at a depth of about 40m underground, but it costs twice as much as when building a road above ground.

There are also concerns that it will be possible to quickly respond to fires, various accidents, and disasters.

An official from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said, "We plan to carry out 40% by finance and the rest by the burden of road construction."
