With the health crisis, the pet market has experienced a real acceleration.

According to a study carried out by the Promojardin-Prom'animal association, sales of animal products (food, accessories and equipment) increased by 6% in 2020 in the scope of food distribution, pet stores, garden centers, free -agricultural services, DIY stores and e-commerce.

Items for cats and dogs are among the main drivers of this growth, but there is also an increase in purchases for other species, such as small mammals (+ 8%), farmed birds (+ 3%), or again from the farmyard (+ 9%).

In total, the market generated more than 5 billion in turnover in 2020, an increase of 1.5 in ten years.

The e-commerce boom

“The 2020 results show how much households needed to refocus on the essentials and pamper their little companions.

We are positive for the years to come, because the health crisis has also led the French to favor a living environment conducive to the possession of animals, ”comments Hanan Abdesselem, the general secretary of the association, in the report.

While all sectors of distribution have been affected by this growth, there is one in particular that is showing stronger growth than the others: e-commerce.

With the successive health measures and confinements, many stores have had to close their doors for several weeks.

It is therefore quite natural that the French went to this circuit to make their purchases.

Now, nearly 15% of animal sales are made online.
