With a bicycle you rarely attract the glances of passers-by or drivers.

That's more likely to happen when you're in a rare Italian sports car or on a bubbling American motorcycle.

But on a bike?

But one bike can do it - the Angell Bike from France.

The new pedelec, which is currently being rolled out in Germany, is noticeably inconspicuous with its stylishly curved frame, the silky matt paint and the battery with the two taillights at the rear, which also function as indicators.

At the same time, the French pedelec, which competes against competitors such as the sushi bike or the Cowboy 3, is not just an e-bike.

With its touchscreen integrated into the handlebars, it's almost a smart bike.

A driving report.

The purpose of the Angell Bike

display

The Angell feels most at home in the city and the surrounding area.

Well-developed roads and cycle paths are the terrain of the pedelec.

If you cycle to work and still want to look good after arriving in a business dress, the French e-bike is a good choice.

Both short distances and distances of, for example, 15 kilometers can be tackled in a relaxed manner.

The bike is less suitable for excursions into the forest, because the Angell offers too little comfort.

Large purchases or the transport of children are also more likely to be carried out with other bikes.

The charging capacities of the pedelec are designed for small loads.

Technology of the Angell Bike

The frame is made of painted aluminum.

This also makes it quite stiff.

For a pedelec, however, this construction again makes it quite light: the Angell weighs 15.9 kilos including the battery.

With its 28 inch wheels, it is designed for users between 165 and 195 centimeters in height.

display

A 2.4 inch touchscreen display is permanently installed on the stem.

The speed, distance, time and calories consumed are displayed.

The four different driving modes from no to strong electrical assistance can also be set via the display.

This is even better with the buttons on the handlebars, which can be reached without having to lower your eyes from the road.

One of the highlights of the Angell is the light: the turn signal, which is also controlled via two buttons on the left side of the handlebars (motorcyclists know this).

When it is operated, a light on the back of the battery and one on the handlebars indicate where the driver is headed.

At the same time, the two lights in the battery are brake lights.

Other functions can be controlled via the app: The automatic light, which was previously only used in cars, which mode should be the basic setting, a 3-D card in the display, how the buttons on the handlebars can be assigned.

The location of the bike can also be called up.

So you always know where the Angell is.

The two lights on the battery also function as brake lights.

The 36 volt, 4 ampere battery is attached to the rear and secured with a lock.

Although it looks like the luggage rack, it has no load capacity.

It drives the 250 watt motor in the rear wheel hub, which provides pedal assistance up to 25 km / h.

The range of around 70 kilometers is enough for several days in most cases.

If you run the battery empty, no problem: the bike can easily be continued in Free Fly mode.

The battery can be charged with the charger at any socket within two hours.

Driving impression of the Angell Bike

When it comes to fishing, you have to rethink a bit as a cyclist.

Unlock the lock, get on and off you go in principle.

However, the alarm system sounds after a few meters.

If you prefer to avoid the shrill sound - and the glances of passers-by - you have to unlock the bike first.

This can be done either via the app on the smartphone or on the display in the handlebar.

What stands out: the bike is absolutely solid.

Nothing rattles, nothing wobbles, nothing makes noise.

However, this solidity is quickly noticeable on uneven paths, because shocks are mercilessly passed on to the driver via the handlebars and saddle.

Elegant and modern - the design of the Angell suits its urban area of application

The Angell shows its strength on flat paths.

If you don't drive in “Fly Free” mode without electrical assistance, but use the electric motor in one of the three other programs, you will be pushed gently but noticeably.

The electrical support is particularly noticeable at the traffic lights.

At the start you leave other cyclists behind you quickly.

And of course on inclines that can be easily mastered with the Angell without getting anywhere near out of breath.

One drawback: experienced cyclists can pedal quickly with the standard bike, because the cadence is quite high from a speed of around 28 km / h.

Anyone who travels faster with their racing or trekking bike has to get used to this.

Equipment, accessories, peripherals

In the basic configuration, the Angell is puristic.

Bike and battery - there is not much more at first.

However, the range of accessories is quite extensive.

It ranges from the practical handlebar basket to fenders, as the mudguards are called here, to rear-view mirrors, a second battery, another charger or a security lock.

If you want, you can also equip yourself with a special drinking bottle or helmet and get reflectors for your bike.

In any case, the online boutique is well stocked with suitable lifestyle products.

The basic equipment of the bike is sparse.

The wooden fenders alone cost extra

It may make more sense to buy an external battery-powered headlight, which is not offered in the official shop.

Because the LED headlights built into the handlebars make the driver visible from afar in the dark, but only sparsely illuminate the way.

If there are no street lights by the wayside, the ride in the dark is like a ride in the dark.

And: The fender for the rear wheel looks good in the wood look.

It does not offer real protection against splashing water when it rains.

If you want your business dress to stay clean, you have to provide appropriate protective clothing on rainy days.

Price and availability

According to the manufacturer, the Angell costs 2860 euros.

If you consider that you can easily spend 2000 euros for a good bike without an electric motor, that doesn't necessarily seem expensive.

However, the basic equipment of the Angell is quite naked.

For example, if you want a luggage rack for the handlebar, you have to pay another 119 euros, fenders cost 89 euros, a side stand costs 19 euros.

The 3,000 euro limit is cracked so quickly.

Conclusion:

The Angell seems to be the right bike at the right time.

In the Corona year 2020, a total of 5.04 million bicycles were sold in Germany.

E-bikes accounted for 1.95 million units - 43.4 percent more than in 2019.

In the meantime, more people are on the bike in cities.

The Angell makes switching to the bike easy, because with its electric motor, even longer passages can be tackled in a relaxed manner.

Control via the display is self-explanatory, even if the smart functions can still be expanded.

The battery is handy and easy to transport.

A replacement battery in the shop costs 449 euros
