Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi
presented his recovery plan
to Parliament today, saying that Italy is gambling all its "credibility" with the recovery plan financed by the European Union.
"We are wrong if we consider that it is a series of projects," said Draghi after emphasizing that with this plan "the destiny of Italy is at stake, its credibility, as a founding country of the European Union and a protagonist of the Western world," he said. .
The prime minister illustrated
before the House of Representatives the shock plan for the Italian economy
that must be carried out with the fund allocated by the European Union.
Italy is going to receive 191.5 billion euros (about 231.6 billion dollars) in grants and loans and plans to use its own resources of more than 30 billion euros.
The detailed spending plan
must be sent before Friday, April 30, to the authorities of the European Union
for approval.
"The government wants to leave a more modern country to the new generations," said the head of government.
The Italian head of government reiterated that those most affected by the pandemic "have been the weakest layers of the population."
"Once again women and young people and the inhabitants of the south of the peninsula have been the hardest hit," he stressed.
The plan has three main objectives, the first of which, in the short term, is "to repair the economic and social damage" caused by the COVID-19 epidemic, Draghi explained to the parliamentarians.
The other two objectives of that plan, more "in the medium and long term", are the ecological transition and solving the "weaknesses that afflict our economy and our society for decades", such as the gap between regions and genders, he added.
