And two officials in the outlets that sell these price differences attributed to competition, profit margin, internal transportation, and the cost borne by the outlets.

They explained that the prices of local goods may differ from one point of sale to another, and from one emirate to another, and that the price of the commodity may vary according to the location of the outlet if it is inside or outside a commercial shopping center, and they stressed that intense competition may push merchants to reduce the price to the limit The lowest, and selling some commodities with a very small profit margin, in order to create a reputation and attract many consumers.

The Ministry of Economy had previously announced that it was publishing commodity prices in various sales outlets to protect consumers, allow price comparison and choose the most appropriate outlet for purchase.

The ministry attributed the differences in selling prices of similar food commodities to the factors of competition between different outlets in the markets, which provides consumers with different alternatives and choices.

Competition and location

The sales official at a sales outlet with branches in a number of emirates of the country, Rajeev Tamara, said that «the prices of local goods may differ from one point of sale to another, and from one emirate to another. Commercial or non-commercial shopping ».

He explained that “the level of competition plays a role in determining the price,” indicating that intense competition may push merchants to reduce the price to a minimum, and sell some commodities with a very small profit margin.

Attracting consumers

For his part, the sales official at another outlet, Ahmed Seddiqi, said that "the cost of local transportation should not be overlooked, especially if the transport takes place between emirates with distances between them."

He added that "the differences in prices are due in part to the profit margin set by the outlet, as well as the cost it bears, such as the rental value, the prices of services, and other factors."

He continued: "Just as outlets raise the prices of some commodities to achieve a high profit margin, or to meet the high cost that they bear, so other sales outlets reduce the level of profit to a minimum, even if only temporarily, in order to build a reputation and attract many consumers."

Unexplained differences

In addition, the expert in retail affairs, Davy Nagpal, said that "the differences in the prices of domestic commodities should not exceed two or three dirhams at most, to protect consumers' rights, with strong justifications for these differences."

Nagpal considered the existence of large differences in the selling prices of local commodities that are absolutely unjustified, indicating that local commodities differ from their imported counterparts, referring to differences in the selling prices of imported goods to freight rates, the difference of the supplier, the timing and conditions of import, and their price in the country of origin
