The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy launched the seventh report on the state of the green economy, which was prepared in cooperation between the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, the Dubai Center of Excellence for Carbon Control, and the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority.

The report revealed that the percentage of clean energy capacity in the energy mix in Dubai is about 9%, which is 2% more than the percentage set for 2020, at a time when the emirate has achieved a significant reduction in carbon emissions, as net carbon dioxide emissions in the emirate of Dubai decreased by 22 Percent in 2019, two years ahead of the target for reducing emissions by 16 percent by 2021.

In the opening speech of the report, the Vice President of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and the Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, said that the report highlights the most prominent achievements of institutions and actors that include practices, and success stories that contribute to accelerating the transformation towards the economy. the green.

He added: “These accomplishments are the fruit of the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, which foresees the future, and in light of (UAE Centennial 2071), which aims to secure a happy and sustainable future for our future generations, and make the UAE the best country in the world.

He stressed that the UAE has achieved a tangible advantage in responding to the "Covid-19" pandemic, and officially announced that the digital and green economy will serve as a basis for recovery in the country after the end of the pandemic.

Therefore, the report also sheds light on the most prominent efforts made by public and private sector institutions to overcome challenges and address the effects of the pandemic by applying innovative solutions in their operations.

He explained that "despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the year 2020 witnessed the UAE laying the foundations for a comprehensive development plan for the next 50 years, which will be developed in 2021."

Report chapters

Al Tayer stated that the report includes five chapters, dealing with a variety of issues that all play a major role in the road map for sustainable development that the country adopts for the next 50 years, starting from increasing energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions in various sectors, to building an economy based on Knowledge, promoting the digital future.

The report also includes charts showing trends and numbers, the UAE’s ranking in global indicators, and data related to the “Covid-19” pandemic, in line with the topics discussed in each chapter.

The capital of the green economy

For his part, the Secretary General of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Ahmed Butti Al Muhairbi, said that the seventh report on the state of the green economy sheds light on the strides that the emirate of Dubai has made in its path towards becoming a global capital for the green economy and sustainable development, including exceeding the ratios set in the «Strategy Dubai Clean Energy 2050 », to provide 75% of the energy production capacity in Dubai from clean energy sources by 2050, pointing out that the percentage of clean energy capacity within the energy mix in Dubai is about 9%, which is 2% more than the percentage set for 2020.

He added: “The emirate has achieved a significant reduction in carbon emissions, and net carbon dioxide emissions in Dubai decreased by 22% in 2019, which is two years before the target date in the Dubai Carbon Emission Reduction Strategy 2021 to reduce emissions by 16% by 2021.” .
