DECRYPTION

After a heated debate, the flagship measure of the climate bill was officially adopted by the National Assembly, at first reading on Saturday evening: domestic flights which can be replaced by an alternative route taking less than 2h30 by train will be abolished in France.

Which trips are affected?

Concretely, this means that there will be no more flights between Paris Orly and Nantes, Lyon or Bordeaux, connections that can be made quickly by train.

There will however be exceptions, departing from Roissy, for connections.

If, when we can travel again, you decide to bet in Thailand from Lyon, you can still fly from Lyon, to pick up your flight in Paris.

it is ultimately a minimum measure that is voted: for there to be a real ecological impact, the citizens' climate convention called for the abolition of all flights with an alternative train of less than 4 hours.

Two arguments were opposed: the risk for employment at Air France, when the company is already hit hard by the Covid-19 epidemic, and the risk for certain territories of being completely landlocked.

Paris-Rennes or Lyon-Marseille concerned?

This vote finally ratifies what had already been negotiated between Air France and the government: the State had indeed conditioned its financial aid, a year ago, on the abolition of these domestic flights.

The decree will have to further specify this measure, and especially any other lines likely to be affected, such as Paris-Rennes, or Lyon-Marseille.
