Green traffic enters the "fast lane"

  Our reporter Qi Hui

The transportation sector is a “larger” of carbon emissions, accounting for about 15% of the country’s final carbon emissions.

To achieve the goal of "carbon peak and carbon neutrality", the transportation industry has an important task.

How to make the connection between the two and promote low-carbon and high-efficiency while serving economic and social development is a problem that the transportation industry must face and focus on solving at present and for a period of time in the future.

Total carbon emissions are still growing

As of 2020, the number of motor vehicles nationwide will reach 372 million, of which 281 million are automobiles.

According to estimates, a car emits approximately 2.5 kg of carbon dioxide for every liter of fuel burned.

Coupled with aviation, railway, water transportation, etc., carbon emissions in the transportation sector are very large, and there is also a lot of room for emission reduction.

Judging from the situation in recent years, although the unit intensity of carbon emissions in the transportation industry has declined, the total amount is still growing.

According to statistics, in the past nine years, the average annual growth rate of carbon emissions in my country's transportation sector has remained above 5%, which has become one of the fastest growing areas of greenhouse gas emissions.

How to formulate effective emission reduction plans without affecting economic operations is particularly important.

Experts say that there are many transportation points, long lines, and wide areas, so upstream and downstream linkages must be promoted to promote emission reduction.

"The automobile, transportation, and energy industries constitute a close and complete carbon chain." Zhang Yongwei, vice chairman and secretary-general of the China Electric Vehicles Association of 100, believes that the three are interconnected, mutually supportive, and mutually restrictive. "The formulation of goals and strategies must achieve all-round coordination to ensure that the goals in each field can be implemented.

Wang Xianjin, deputy dean and chief engineer of the Academy of Sciences of the Ministry of Transport, agreed with this.

He said that reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector lies not only in the transportation sector itself, but in the entire industry chain of the transportation industry, including the energy economy and energy intensity of the vehicle itself, transportation energy consumption, and energy supply.

So, how should the development path of the transportation "dual carbon" goal be formulated?

Li Xinghua, Dean of the China Transportation Research Institute of Tongji University, believes that good transportation planning is the most important link. It is necessary to focus on the relationship between transportation layout and land space utilization, urbanization mode, and the relationship between transportation supply and social production and life. Strengthen electricity, energy and Linkage between transportation and other fields.

This year, the Ministry of Transport launched the "Endurance Project" for green travel to promote the construction of charging piles and charging stations in important urban agglomerations, key areas of metropolitan areas, expressway service areas, passenger transport hubs and other transportation service stations, so as to provide long-distance green for the masses The convenience of travel reflects the emphasis on synergistic carbon reduction between upstream and downstream.

New technology boosts industry emissions reduction

When the vehicle reaches the high-speed toll gate, it will slow down. The system will automatically raise the pole to collect the toll after detecting the ETC, and the vehicle will then leave the toll gate.

Such scenes are constantly staged across the country.

ETC not only facilitates people's travel, but also has an impact on carbon reduction.

According to calculations, non-stop charging reduces the braking and restarting of vehicles. This process can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 50%. Combined with my country's huge car ownership, it is not a small amount.

Compared with developed countries, China has a shorter time and a heavier task from committing to carbon emissions to achieving carbon neutrality, and it needs to use the power of science and technology.

Experts said that to achieve the goal of "carbon peak and carbon neutrality", the energy, transportation, and automobile manufacturing industries need to conduct sufficient basic research, scientific and technological research and development, and transformation of results, and the entire innovation chain and industrial chain need to be disrupted.

Judging from the current situation, technology promotes emissions reduction in the transportation sector mainly in two aspects.

One is the electrification transformation, which promotes the wide application of natural gas buses and new energy vehicles.

Take new energy vehicles as an example. In recent years, my country's new energy vehicle industry has developed rapidly, and the proportion of new energy vehicles has increased rapidly, reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector.

Only Weilai. Since the delivery of the first new car in June 2018, users have traveled a total of 1.65 billion kilometers, which has reduced 109,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions compared with gasoline cars driving the same mileage.

  The other is digital upgrade.

New Internet technologies are constantly merging with the field of smart transportation to make the use of resources more efficient.

In terms of smart city and smart transportation construction, the emerging digital twin technology can build a cloud digital twin city for the overall planning, dispatching, operation and management of transportation.

In terms of new infrastructure such as intercity high-speed railway, intercity rail transit, and charging pile network, the comprehensive application of AI, big data, cloud computing and other technologies can improve land use efficiency, transportation efficiency, and reduce resource consumption and carbon emissions.

Wang Xianjin said that in the future, energy supply, supercomputing, digital transportation, etc. will all be included in the scope of new business forms, new models, and new technologies. With "carbon peak and carbon neutral" as the traction, it will stimulate the iterative upgrade of various elements of transportation. .

Optimize transportation structure

In February of this year, the "Outline of the National Comprehensive Three-dimensional Transportation Network Plan" issued by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council proposed to accelerate the promotion of green and low-carbon development and reach the peak of carbon dioxide emissions in the transportation sector as soon as possible.

The ninth meeting of the Central Finance and Economics Committee also clearly requested that "the transportation sector should accelerate the formation of green and low-carbon transportation methods" and "encourage green travel."

As we all know, highways account for more than 70% of my country's transportation.

While railway and waterway transportation have the advantages of large volume and low carbon, they have problems such as the "last mile" and cannot be effectively replaced.

The synergy of my country's comprehensive transportation system is not enough.

Accelerating the formation of a green and low-carbon transportation method requires changing this situation, increasing the proportion of green and low-carbon transportation methods, and increasing the synergy of the integrated transportation system.

Wang Yang, Chief Planner and Director of the Comprehensive Planning Department of the Ministry of Transport, said in response to a reporter's question that the Ministry of Transport actively promotes research work related to transportation carbon peaks and promotes a comprehensive green and low-carbon transformation of transportation.

Among them, the important point is to optimize and adjust the transportation structure, accelerate the promotion of the “revolutionary railway” and “revolutionary water transfer” of bulk cargo and medium and long-distance transportation, vigorously develop multimodal transportation, increase the proportion of containerized iron-water combined transportation and water-water transfer, and carry out the creation of green travel. Take action to increase the proportion of green travel.

In recent years, China National Railway Group Co., Ltd. has taken many actions to increase railway capacity and speed up the integrated development with other modes of transportation. The proportion of railway transportation has increased.

It is understood that this year the railway sector will meet the central government’s “carbon peak and carbon neutral” target requirements, comprehensively optimize the layout of railway freight, and promote the entry of special railway lines into ports, mining areas, and logistics parks to help win the battle against pollution.

In addition, green travel is also an important means to promote carbon reduction.

Compared with private car travel, public transportation can effectively reduce per capita traffic carbon emissions.

In recent years, local transportation departments have implemented the "public transportation priority" development strategy, increasing supply, optimizing routes, and intelligently dispatching. At the same time, they have provided more accurate public transportation queries through big data to encourage and attract the public to choose more green travel methods.

Experts predict that public transportation will be further developed under the goal of "carbon peak and carbon neutrality", subway, light rail, urban rail, and public transportation will become more and more intelligent, and the problem of "last mile" will also increase. Be further resolved.
