The head of EU diplomacy, who coordinates the work of the Joint Commission of the JCPOA (the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action concluded in Vienna in 2015), carried out intense diplomatic work before organizing the virtual meeting of this Friday.

He wanted to quickly bring together all the players around the negotiating table: representatives of China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom and Iran.

For Josep Borrell, it is to discuss a possible return of the United States in the JCPOA and how to ensure the full and effective implementation of the

'

agreement by all parties.

"A positive step" for Washington

The United States welcomed the announcement of the meeting saying it is ready for "

reciprocal measures

" with Iran to return to this text.

This is a positive step

," US diplomacy spokesman Ned Price told reporters.

"

We are ready to return in full respect of our commitments

" within the framework of the 2015 agreement "

if Iran does the same

", reaffirmed Ned Price "

We are studying the options to achieve this, in particular via indirect discussions" with the Iranians "through our European partners

", he added.

Iran is ready to return to full compliance with this text if Washington first lifts

its sanctions

“

in practice

”, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei recalled last month.

Tehran

stopped honoring its nuclear commitments after Donald Trump's unilateral withdrawal in 2018 of the United States from the Vienna agreement and the reinstatement of American sanctions which are suffocating the Iranian economy.

The

agreement signed by Iran

in Vienna in 2015 with the great powers (United States, China, Russia, Germany, France, United Kingdom) as well as the EU aims to prevent the Islamic Republic from acquiring the bomb atomic, with strict limits to its nuclear program supposed to remain exclusively civilian and peaceful.

The international community had in return lifted all its economic sanctions against Iran.
