The number of new cars sold in Japan in the last year decreased by more than 7% from the previous year due to the decrease in the number of people visiting dealers due to the two declarations of emergency.

According to the announcement by the Japan Automobile Dealers Association and others, the number of new cars sold in Japan during the last year from April to March last year was 4,656,632, a decrease of 7.6% from the previous year.

This is the second consecutive year that sales have fallen below the previous year.

Of these, passenger cars, trucks and buses decreased by 8.9% to more than 2.89 million units, and light vehicles decreased by 5.3% to more than 1.75 million units.

Last year, two emergency declarations were issued due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection, and it echoed that the number of people visiting car dealers has decreased significantly.

In addition, the number of buses sold decreased sharply to 40.4%, and it seems that the replacement of buses did not proceed mainly in the tourism industry.

This year, which began on the 1st, it is expected that there will be a shortage of semiconductors for cars due to a fire at the main factory of Renesas Electronics, a major semiconductor manufacturer.

According to an industry group, "If an automobile manufacturer cuts production due to a shortage of semiconductors, sales may be affected and the future is uncertain."
