He refused to release a Canadian businessman accused of sexual crimes

The Canadian judiciary has ordered the continued imprisonment of the Canadian businessman, Peter Nygard, who is accused of committing sexual crimes, and whom the United States is requesting his extradition.

The millionaire, active in the fashion sector, had appealed a previous decision to the "Winnipeg" court in Manitoba, Canada, refusing to release him, fearing that he would come into contact with witnesses or victims.

On Friday, the Court of Appeals in Manitoba rejected his request, saying that the imprisonment of 79-year-old Nygard was "necessary to maintain confidence in the administration of the judiciary."

In its ruling, the court indicated that the "extreme nature" of the allegations and "their extent" showed the image of a person with "criminal behavior with planning, financing and a disturbing breadth."

Negard's lawyer had initially requested his release on bail last January, expressing fear of his client being infected with "Covid-19" in prison.

But the judge handling the case rejected the argument, as only seven cases of the virus were detected out of 500 prisoners in Manitoba prison where the millionaire is located.

Negard faces nine charges, including extortion and sex trafficking, against "at least 12 victims in several countries, including the United States, Bahamas and Canada."
