ArcelorMittal, which aims for carbon neutrality by 2050, will significantly increase its recycled steel production capacity at its Fos-sur-Mer site (Bouches-du-Rhône), an investment of 63 million euros , thanks in particular to state aid 15 million euros.
“We believe in the future of heavy industry in France and in Europe.
But for that, there is a condition, it is to make the strategic choice of the decarbonization of our industry ”, explained Friday the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire, visiting the site.
"An exemplary site"
But "this decarbonization has only one flaw, it is very expensive", he continued, recalling that the aid of 15 million euros from the State was to make Fos "a site. exemplary ”in the matter.
Aid of 500,000 euros will also be paid for digitization.
"We expect from this stimulus plan that the aid is intended exclusively for the development of our industrial capacities and the development of long-term jobs and high-level status", reacts the CGT in a press release.
Production multiplied by five by 2025
"Thanks to this investment, we will multiply our quantity of recycled steel by five by 2025", from 100,000 to 500,000 tonnes per year, said ArcelorMittal Méditerranée CEO Bruno Ribo.
Recovered from household waste but also from end-of-life ships or dismantled railcars, recycled steel makes it possible to consume less iron ores, less coal and therefore emit less greenhouse gases.
