The price of bitcoin rose on Wednesday, taking advantage of an announcement by Elon Musk.

The latter indicated that Tesla's purchases could now be made with the first cryptocurrency in the United States.

At around 11:20 GMT, bitcoin appreciated 3.8% to $ 56,508.

"You can now buy a Tesla in bitcoin," said the boss of the electric vehicle manufacturer on his Twitter account, before specifying that the company would not immediately resell the bitcoins acquired in this way.

Later in the year for other countries

Given the extreme volatility of cryptocurrencies, most companies that accept bitcoin payments immediately convert the amount received into dollars.

But Tesla had already invested $ 1.5 billion of its ample cash in bitcoin, an unexpected move that had spiked the price of bitcoin.

“The ability to pay in bitcoin will be available outside the United States later this year,” he added.

The reaction on Wednesday was moderate, with bitcoin remaining below its all-time high, reaching $ 61,742 earlier in the month.
