The multinational energy company Naturgy has just launched a voluntary sick leave plan for around

1,000 people in Spain

.

The company's plan, which lost 347 million in 2020, is in its initial phase and the layoffs of personnel will be voluntary and agreed.

"Naturgy's will has always been to negotiate with the workforce and it has been and is at all times willing to dialogue and collaborate with the union representation," company sources explained to Efe, who justify this new plan for voluntary redundancies in response to the evolution of the energy sector and criteria of efficiency and digitization.

The news of the

layoff

plan, advanced by

, implies that Naturgy deepens in the reduction of workforce undertaken in recent years.

According to data collected by Efe, the multinational energy company Naturgy has reduced its workforce by a total of

9,399 people in the last five years

-that is, from 2015 to 2020- due to the divestments made in some countries and to job terminations agreed with the employees.

At the end of 2015, Naturgy - then called Gas Natural Fenosa - had a total workforce of 19,939 people, after having integrated the Chilean company CGE at the end of 2014, in what was its largest international operation, and five years later the The multinational closed 2020 with a total workforce of 10,540 people, according to data from Naturgy's different annual financial reports.

However, this last figure still includes the workforce of the Chilean CGE, because the sale of the electricity distribution business of that Naturgy subsidiary has not yet been closed, something planned for the next few months.

However, Naturgy itself calculates that its workforce, already discounting the personnel associated with the business sold in Chile, will be around 9,335 people.

In the case of Spain, the Naturgy workforce was reduced throughout 2020 by 699 people, from the 6,017 it had at the end of 2019 to a total of 5,318 employees at the end of 2020, so that Spain continues to concentrate the majority of the personal.

In recent years, Naturgy has implemented various efficiency plans that have facilitated agreed departures of personnel, and has also carried out

outsourcing of services

as well as asset sales -including corporate buildings- to make the company more and more efficient and save cost.

It is a policy that began long ago, accelerated in the stage of Rafael Villaseca as CEO and intensified even more with Francisco Reynés as president.

The origin of the current efficiency plan is in Naturgy's strategic plan until 2022, which Reynés presented to investors at the end of June 2018 in London.

Then, Naturgy announced that it intended to achieve annual cost savings of 500 million in 2022. However, the multinational has completed it faster than expected and has even gone further, achieving savings of 545 million at the end of 2020 .
