display

A lot helps a lot.

A thick battery ensures a long runtime.

And the thickest is now the Samsung Galaxy M51 with 7000 mAh.

With this Oschi, Samsung succeeds in pushing Sony's handy endurance miracle out of first place.

Sony only used a narrow 4000 mAh to measure the runtime.

Still a consolation for Samsung after the current top models Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21 Plus and Galaxy S21 Ultra did not appear in the "Computer Bild" mobile phone battery best list.

In the meantime, around 30 cell phones have broken the ten-hour mark, from which we are currently assigning a 1.0.

These include numerous Galaxies, but not a single model from the upscale Samsung Galaxy S class.

A cheap Xiaomi causes a stir: the Poco M3 completes the endurance podium.

display

Apart from the small Sony, it is Apple that places its top model far ahead among the well-equipped entry-level androids.

After years of being short of breath, Apple has also scored with stamina since the 11th iPhones.

The 12-series iPhones even turned out to be real efficiency miracles.

In this photo gallery you can see the measured values of the tested smartphones and the link to the detailed test as well as the price comparison.

This is how "Computer Bild" tests cell phone batteries

The mobile phone battery test by "Computer Bild" is even more informative thanks to the new test method.

A robot arm operates every smartphone until its power storage is empty.

In this demanding test, the models make calls, type text messages, surf the web, record videos and play them - over and over again until the battery is empty.

display

The profile simulates a real “heavy user” who doesn't give his device a break;

In practice, the cell phones last longer.

But the times determined for intensive use are perfect for comparing endurance.

Below you can see an overview of the top placements.

With a click on the device name you land on the detailed test.

Endurance 1st place: Samsung Galaxy M51

With its price, the Samsung Galaxy M51 puts aside the bargain idea of the M series a little.

But it also offers more than the other M-Galaxies.

More speed, decent photos, a really good OLED display and by far the longest running time of 14.2 hours in the “Computer Bild” mobile phone battery test.

Endurance place 2: Sony Xperia 5 II

What Sony delivers with the Xperia 5 II cannot actually be at all.

The battery has a capacity of "only" 4000 milliampere hours (mAh) and is therefore just as big as in the big brother Xperia 1 II, which has a slightly larger diagonal and a higher resolution, but with the same processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 865) is working.

display

The Xperia 1 II achieved an acceptable 7.1 hours in the laboratory.

With fewer and smaller pixels, it was foreseeable that the Xperia 5 II would last longer, but no one believed in 13.5 hours.

In the standard setting with a screen refresh rate of 60 Hertz, the Xperia 5 II actually lasted 805 minutes with intensive use.

With activated 120 Hertz, things looked very different for the Xperia 5 II!

The long runtime is made possible by its extraordinary efficiency.

The 5 II lasts 36.9 minutes per watt hour (Wh).

Only Apple gets even more out of the 12er iPhones (see below).

For comparison: the Xperia 1 II only manages 20.1 min / Wh.

The fact that the Xperia 5 II cannot charge inductively, as one would expect from a top model, is a side note in view of this performance.

Endurance 3rd place: Xiaomi Poco M3

The particular strength of the Xiaomi Poco M3 has its origin in the huge capacity of the battery: 6000 mAh ensure a record-breaking runtime.

The M3 lasted 13:20 hours with intensive use.

If you don't even know what to do with all the energy, you can charge other devices via USB-C.

You can charge the Poco M3 with a maximum of 18 watts.

The big battery takes a lot of time and takes just under three hours from empty to full.

However, the charging time does not matter when charging at night and during the day you will only run out of juice with the M3 if you do not charge for several days.

Endurance place 4: Samsung Galaxy M30s

The Samsung Galaxy M30s dominated the 2019 battery test. With 6000 mAh, the cell phone has one of the thickest power storage of all test items.

And that ensures an outstanding endurance of 13.1 hours with intensive use.

On top of that, the M30s uses energy sparingly - the rather slow processor is frugal.

However, charging is also rather slow: with the included power supply, it takes over five hours until the "Big Block" is full again.

Endurance place 5: Samsung Galaxy A21s

display

The Samsung Galaxy A21s is a cell phone with a number of weaknesses. The display is not suitable for sun exposure and the pace is slow.

Because of the price, the Galaxy A21s is still interesting: for everyone who is looking for a cheap branded smartphone with a large display and wants to run the Corona app.

The low resolution is even an advantage for seniors because the representation is not so detailed.

The endurance is excellent at 12.8 hours.

Endurance place 6: Samsung Galaxy M11

The Samsung Galaxy M11 is cheap and designed for endurance.

The running time is great.

For this you have to come to terms with a slower pace and an LCD screen that is not particularly sharp or high-contrast.

The photo quality is sufficient for snapshots in daylight.

Endurance place 7: Samsung Galaxy A31

Like the A41, the Samsung Galaxy A31 offers OLED screen technology at a low price.

This ensures crisp contrasts and great colors.

The strengths of the A31 are the large display (6.4 inches) and the strong battery, which provided 12.3 hours of runtime in the test.

The camera is okay, daylight shots and selfies are surprisingly good for the price range.

However, the pace of work is slow.

Apps start slowly, gamers have to live with choppy games.

But once the apps are running, the operating speed is still okay.

Endurance place 8: Samsung Galaxy M31

The Samsung Galaxy M31, like the M30s, runs at 6,000 mAh and has an enormous battery life.

In the lab, it didn't quite get close to the M30s.

48 minutes were missing.

Still a strong performance.

When it comes to charging, it looks like the M30s.

The M31 has more RAM (6 instead of 4 GB) and offers a higher camera resolution for the front and main camera.

There is also a macro lens.

Tip: The new Galaxy M21 comes with a giant 6000 battery as an even cheaper variant.

Endurance place 9: Samsung A42 5G

The Samsung Galaxy A42 5G competes with 5,000 mAh.

The runtime in the laboratory was 11.9 hours.

A full charge took 2.5 hours in the test.

Endurance place 10: Realme 7 5G

display

At 5000 mAh, the Realme 7 5G's battery is very large.

In the test it lasted 11.5 hours.

Realme packs a 30 watt charger and promises a maximum charging time of 65 minutes - in the laboratory it even took only 63 minutes to fully charge the battery again.

Endurance place 11: Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max

The iPhone 12 Pro Max brings a real pro feeling to the iPhone with its large screen.

It has the longest battery life of any current iPhone model.

At 11 hours and 25 minutes, the Max lasts almost three hours longer than its predecessor 11 Pro Max - as long as no 5G data transmission drains the power.

However, no power supply is included.

With the 20-watt USB-C power adapter offered by Apple, the battery was charged to 50 percent in just 30 minutes.

If you use the old power supply from the iPhone 11, for example, charging takes forever, because it only has an output of 5 watts.

Endurance place 12: Redmi Note 9T

The battery in the Redmi Note 9T 5G has a capacity of 5,000 mAh and lasted 11.4 hours in the test.

The power supply delivers up to 22.5 watts, but the Redmi Note 9T 5G charges with a maximum of 18 watts.

In the test, a full charge took 2.5 hours.

Xiaomi promises that the battery will not show any noticeable signs of aging for the first three years.

Endurance place 13: Motorola Moto E5

The Motorola Moto E5 is a cheap smartphone, but with poor performance.

There is only one outstanding quality: endurance.

With a runtime of 11.1 hours, it is one of the most enduring devices in the test field.

As with the M30s, the efficiency is good and the charging time is poor.

Endurance place 14: Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite

The battery in the Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite has a capacity of 4820 mAh.

In the battery test it lasted 11 hours with intensive use and exceeded the limit for a 1.0 by a whole hour!

It can be charged quickly with 33 watts using the included power supply unit.

A full charge thus took 66 minutes in the test.

There is no wireless charging - an extra that is reserved for expensive smartphones.

Endurance place 15: Realme 7

display

The Realme 7 is a mid-range model with good technology.

The battery is very large with 5000 mAh and provides great endurance with 11 hours.

The processor can't quite keep up with the competition - but it's still not bad.

The display and the camera were not completely convincing.

For the price, the Realme 7 is still a decent smartphone.

Endurance place 16: OnePlus Nord N10

The battery of the OnePlus Nord N10 has a capacity of 4300 mAh and supports the in-house charging technology Warp Charge 30T, which charges with around 30 watts.

In the test, 10 minutes were enough to recharge from 33 to 41 percent.

The complete charge took a whopping 70 minutes.

The endurance turned out to be very good in the cell phone battery test: The OnePlus Nord N10 lasted 10.9 hours with intensive use.

Endurance place 17: Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Lite

The battery in the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Lite is a decent beater: Xiaomi accommodates 5,250 mAh.

With intensive use, our robotic arm had to struggle for 10.9 hours to empty the Mi Note 10 Lite.

A full charge took 68 minutes in the test with the supplied 30 watt power supply.

It's quick, but some cell phones charge even faster.

You have to do without wireless charging.

Endurance place 18: Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro

In terms of speed and endurance, the Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro plays in the upper house.

With the high frequency of screen changes you will win every mobile phone quartet.

The advantage in everyday life: not always recognizable.

You benefit more from the very good pace and enormous endurance.

A high-contrast OLED and inductive charging are missing in order to get to the top.

This is the case with other models in the Xiaomi Mi 10 family.

Endurance place 19: Redmi Note 9 Pro

The Redmi Note 9 Pro convinces with good performance and great battery life including a fast power supply.

In many areas, however, there is still room for improvement: slightly fewer frames, higher display brightness, a flatter camera nub, more grip on the back.

The advertising in the system settings can be switched off, but there is generally no place for that.

Endurance place 20: Redmi Note 8 Pro

The Redmi Note 8 Pro was a price breaker right from the start.

It will also be one of the price-performance tips and the best cell phones under 200 euros in 2021.

All Google apps are on board, Google Pay and Android Auto also work.

The design is pleasing, the features and performance clearly exceed expectations in this price range.

Endurance place 21: Motorola Moto G 5G Plus

It's amazing what Motorola has pulled out of its hat: The Moto G 5G Plus comes with a 21: 9 display.

However, in terms of contrast and brightness, the LCD screen does not see any sun compared to the OLED competition.

Photos during the day and the endurance are great.

Endurance place 22: Gigaset GS4

The endurance of the Gigaset GS4 was very good at 10.3 hours.

What is special is not only that it is “Made in Germany”, but also that it supports wireless charging at a comparatively low price and has a replaceable battery.

This is only available cheaper with the Gigaset G3.

How long does it take to charge?

“Computer Bild” not only determines how long the battery lasts, but also how long the smartphone charges with the included power supply.

At just 40 minutes, the Oppo Find X2 Pro was full at first, but the fastest charging phone is the OnePlus 8T, which took 5 minutes longer, but lasted 82 minutes longer.

The trick is to split the battery in two.

In principle, the 8T charges with two Warp Charge 30. The third fastest mobile phone is the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro (53 min.), Ahead of the Xiaomi Mi 11 (55 min.) And the Oppo Find X2 Lite (56 min.).

Tops and flops: endurance, loading time, efficiency

Source: Computer Bild

The charging cucumbers come from Apple and Redmi: iPhone XR, iPhone XS, XS Max and iPhone 11 charge for over three hours with the (at that time) supplied power supply.

The cheap Redmi 9 also sucks on the socket for that long.

Which cell phone works most efficiently?

Like the displays, the batteries are of different sizes, and the processors also use different amounts of energy.

Apart from the super frugal Sony Xperia 5 II (36.9 min / Wh), which smartphone skimps the most?

The iPhone 12 mini achieves 44.7 min / Wh and thus sets the new record.

Despite the tiny battery (2,227 mAh), it lasted almost ten hours in the test.

Second place also goes to a new iPhone: The iPhone 12 Pro runs an outstanding 37.7 min / Wh.

Only the small battery (2,815 mAh) prevents an even better placement during runtime.

The Xperia 5 II thus slips to efficiency position 3.

After that, it is again apping: iPhone 12 (34.6 min / Wh), iPhone SE (32.9 min / Wh), iPhone 12 Pro Max (32.3 min / Wh).

Then comes Samsung's A-Class, more precisely: Galaxy A21s (32.1 Min / Wh), Galaxy A31 (31.6 Min / Wh), Galaxy A41 (31.3 Min / Wh).

On the other side of the table, the Galaxy S20 Ultra only lasted just under 17 minutes per watt-hour, the S21 Ultra lasted 21.4 minutes. Only the Huawei P40 Lite 5G consumed even more power and only achieved 12.5 minutes in the test / Wh.
