• Housing Calviño reiterates its opposition to limiting rents: "Simplifying complex problems does not help us solve them"

  • Government The Housing Law, about to blow up:

The Vice President of the Government, Pablo Iglesias, has taken one more step in the pressure on the Socialist ministers to impose the limit on rental prices in the way that his party defends.

It has done so by including this section in the

General Guidelines of the Sustainable Development Strategy for the year 2030,

also known as Agenda 2030, which the

Council of Ministers

approved this Tuesday, in the middle of a clash between

PSOE and United We can

on account of the future Housing Law and intervention in prices to stop abusive increases.

Specifically, the guidelines now include putting in place "measures that put a stop to abusive rent increases, promoting the necessary regulations for this, which should include the

power of the autonomous communities and city councils

to establish their price index, the empowerment of city councils to declare urban areas of stressed market when there has been an abusive and sustained increase in rental income and the articulation of containment mechanisms or possible lowering of prices. This issue will be, as established by the commitment of the Government of Spain, one of the fundamental questions of the new Housing Law ".

Engagement isn't really new.

It was already part of the Government agreement between both parties and the subsequent agreement to carry out the General Budgets of 2021. What is new and, above all, what is striking,

is the moment in which it occurs and the intention of the vice president

, Pablo Iglesias, to include it now and not before among the guidelines of said Agenda.

Regarding the moment, it should be remembered that the two parties have been facing each other for weeks over the negotiation of the Housing Law in the face of disagreement on how to limit rents.

The two agree to do so, but they do not agree on the forms.

While UP demands direct intervention on prices in stressed areas, the PSOE is in favor of introducing incentives and fiscal measures that motivate owners to lower prices.

Socialists fear, among other things, the

legal derivatives

that a more direct intervention in the market could lead to.

Yesterday the Vice President of Economic Affairs,

Nadia Calviño

, reiterated her opposition to this alternative.

"Simplifying complex problems does not help us solve them" or "It seems more concrete and efficient to say that we are going to increase the number of homes in the social fund by 26,000, working with banks, Sareb and other types of owners, who

try to generate controversy on issues that are highly debatable "are some of the statements he made on the program La Hora de La 1 on RTVE.

But 24 hours, his support in the Council of Ministers for the

purple

proposal

is interpreted by Iglesias and his environment as a

surrender to their demands

.

Socialist sources assure

EL MUNDO

that what was approved this Tuesday are only guidelines, but that their position remains the same.

That is, they are favorable to promoting lower rents but through incentive, non-interventionist formulas.

Regarding the

intention of Pablo Iglesias

and his team when it comes to including this point in the 2030 Agenda, it would be one more maneuver to increase the pressure on the PSOE in a week in which he and the president, Pedro Sánchez, they plan to meet to try to bring together positions regarding the Housing Law.

Iglesias himself already warned about the unchecking of Ábalos.

"It is a mistake to stress the government stating that an agreement can be breached or that the word given can be betrayed," he said a few days ago.

That is, a way of reminding you that if you do not deliver on what you promised, the coalition could be in danger.

On the sidelines of the meeting of the president and vice president, the

Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda

and the team of the Vice Presidency led by

Ione Belarra

will meet again this Thursday to try to continue advancing in the future rule to regulate the housing market in Spain.
