Audi employees will in future be called “Audians”: As the “Augsburger Allgemeine” (Tuesday edition) reports, the Ingolstadt-based car manufacturer is now using gender-sensitive language.

Corresponding guidelines have been worked out by a project group for a year and have been in effect for internal and external communication since March 1st.

"Appreciation, openness, responsibility and integrity are the basis of our corporate culture, and we make this clear in our language," said Sabine Maaßen, Head of Human Resources, from the Audi board of the "Augsburger Allgemeine".

In order to make all genders consciously visible, Audi employees are recommended to use the so-called gender gap - and to write, for example, “Audiers”.

"The gender gap creates space for all non-binary gender identities," said Antonia Wadé from the project group, explaining the recommendation.

The widespread gender asterisk could evidently lead to problems in IT applications because the asterisk symbol, in contrast to the underscore, is already assigned other functions.

Thirteen-page document says "A head start begins in the head"

According to the newspaper report, the project group spent a year planning and implementing the guideline.

The result, a thirteen-page document, therefore bears the title “The lead begins in the head”.

It is a question of respect and an expression of an attitude against discrimination and for diversity, to communicate in a gender-sensitive manner, according to Audi.

According to the report, Audi's parent company Volkswagen now also wants to examine “how diversity-sensitive language can be implemented sustainably”.

The aim is to find a solution that is widely accepted.
