Some 5.6 million cars changed owners in 2020. Many motorists are indeed tempted by the second-hand market, which makes it possible to buy a vehicle at a lower cost.

This type of transaction, however, involves a thorough investigation, at the risk of discovering too late that the car that we had been so much touted is in fact an old jerk full of problems.

Generate an official history

In order to facilitate the process for individuals, the Ministry of the Interior launched the Histovec.interieur.gouv.fr site in early 2019. The objective: to make the transaction more reliable by allowing the seller to share the official history of his vehicle with the potential buyer.

On the owner's side, all you have to do is register online for free and fill out the form to identify the car to obtain a report containing all the information known to the authorities, such as the date of entry into service, the technical characteristics, the possible successive holders of the gray card and the claims having been the subject of an insurance expertise.

Since January 2021, the document has been enriched by also integrating data from technical inspections.

Once the report is generated, the vehicle owner only has to send the confidential link to the buyer.

In this way, he can enhance his offer by providing official data and reassure the purchaser, who can make an informed choice.

Note that the detailed administrative situation certificate, or certificate of non-pledge, which must be given to the buyer, can also be downloaded from Histovec.
