An unprecedented contraction of the Tunisian economy

Official data revealed today, an unprecedented rate of contraction for the Tunisian economy over the past year, reaching a level of 8.8%.

The Tunisian economy retreated for the first time under the weight of the repercussions of the "Corona" virus and the accumulated difficulties for years, which generated frequent social protests against poverty and unemployment.

The data published by the National Institute of Statistics showed a record contraction in the economy in the second quarter of 2020, parallel to the start of the epidemic, within the range of 21.3%, then in the third quarter it decreased to 5.7%.

The epidemic and quarantine measures in Tunisia caused thousands of people to lose their jobs, collapsed the tourism sector, and affected the activities of cafes, restaurants, services and the travel market.
