The number of treatments for mental illness has risen sharply due to the corona pandemic.

This is shown by an exclusive evaluation of Debeka, which is exclusively available to WELT AM SONNTAG.

According to the private health insurance company from Koblenz, the number of bills submitted for psychotherapy has increased significantly.

In December their number increased by 12.4 percent compared to the previous year, and in November by as much as 26.7 percent.

In October it was twelve percent.

"Many people say that they are finding it increasingly difficult to deal with the corona pandemic," says Debeka boss Thomas Brahm.

Even if the effects can only be grasped with a slight delay, the picture is clear.

“While there was a significant decrease in treatments during the initial lockdown phase, we are seeing a very sharp increase in the final months of 2020,” says Brahm.

Other health insurers confirm this finding: At IKK Südwest, the number of approved applications for psychotherapy has even increased by almost 40 percent compared to the previous year.

"This is a clear indication of increased psychological stress due to the corona pandemic," it says there.

At the AOK, there is no significant increase in applications for psychotherapy, but a “sharp increase in the length of sick leave” due to psychological problems.

It increased by four days in the first nine months of 2020 compared to the same period in the previous year.
