Since the pandemic began, the

use of masks, their price and the appropriateness of using one or the other in each case has been the subject of debate

.

If a few days ago the possibility of recommending the use of FFP2 in certain circumstances was assessed (Health has always advised against them for healthy people), today the Minister of Consumption, Alberto Garzón, has said that there is no scientific evidence to think that they protect better against coronavirus.

"If at any time scientists consider that the most appropriate thing is to change the recommendation of hygienic masks to another type of masks, we would do so from the Government of Spain," he said in an interview on Canal Sur, which Efe has collected.

In some European countries the use of FFP2 masks has been recommended.

Austria has made them mandatory in supermarkets and closed spaces and last week, the director of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, Fernando Simón, pointed out that Health does not rule out doing the same in Spain in specific circumstances.

According to Garzón,

"it does not seem that at the moment there is a sufficiently rigorous source that proves that we are better protected in this way,

with that other type of non-hygienic masks."

When last November the Government announced the reduction of VAT from 21% to 4% on masks, it left out these FFP2, as well as the hygienic ones

,

which, in fact, are the most used and those that sell the supermarket chains.

Surgical ones were recommended for asymptomatic positives

or people who have passed the Covid and FFP2 were recommended only for people in contact with the virus (health workers, exposed workers ...) and for vulnerable groups.

The Ministry of Consumption began in October

a procedure to regulate the market for hygienic masks

(given the explosion that has occurred) and expand the labeling and control requirements of these products.
