The statutory health insurance companies are threatened with high burdens due to the possible long-term consequences of corona infections.

According to a report by WELT AM SONNTAG, SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach expects an additional billions in the next ten years.

In 2022 alone, the statutory coffers are likely to be short of at least 17 billion euros due to expensive changes in the law and the corona pandemic.

According to Maria Klein-Schmeink, health policy spokeswoman for the Greens, the shortfall could even be significantly higher than previously forecast by the health insurers.

The reason for this is, in addition to lower income, the incalculable corona costs.

“The big end for statutory health insurance is yet to come,” warns Martin Litsch, Chairman of the AOK Federal Association, whose member funds insure 27 million people in Germany.

"If the appropriate tax subsidies for the statutory health insurance are not quickly organized after the federal election or if unpopular savings laws are put in place, the statutory health insurers are faced with massive increases in contribution rates," says Litsch, according to the report.

The average additional contribution should almost double to 2.5 percent, and health insurance costs 17.1 percent of the gross salary.
