According to the diplomats, the implementation of the project will strengthen the interconnection between Russia and the EU in the economic sphere, and will also contribute to the energy security of Europe.

“We hope that our EU partners will resist blackmail from Washington, which threatens to apply extraterritorial sanctions against the participants in this project in order to promote its expensive and unresponsive shale gas in Europe,” the statement said.

The day before, the White House said that the new American leader Joe Biden considers Nord Stream 2 a bad deal for Europe. 

They said they were going to study the measures taken by the previous administration regarding the project.

As German Chancellor Angela Merkel noted, US sanctions on Nord Stream 2 are inappropriate.
