Launching the UAE Climate Change Research Network

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment announced the launch of the UAE Climate Change Research Network, with the aim of strengthening the data collection system, preparing research and studies related to the impacts of climate change, and enhancing the capabilities of all sectors to adapt to its repercussions.

The announcement came during the "launch and inaugural meeting of the Emirates Network for Climate Change Research", which was held virtually on the sidelines of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.

The establishment and launch of the network comes within the efforts of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment to raise the awareness of the components of the local community of the nature of the climate changes that the country is witnessing, and its effects in all sectors, and ways to enhance the capabilities of these sectors to adapt to the repercussions of this change, as well as keeping pace with and strengthening the path of the UAE and its global efforts to work For the climate.

Strong build

The Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Dr. Abdullah bin Muhammad Belhaif Al-Nuaimi, said during his announcement of the launch of the network, that “the Ministry has worked, during the last period, to create a strong structure that includes legislation, projects and initiatives that support the ability of all sectors of the state to identify the impacts that could be caused The implications of climate change and the requirements for adaptation to it, as it launched the National Climate Change Plan (2017-2050) and the National Adaptation Program, and prepared a series of reports assessing the risks of climate change on vital sectors in the country, and now, by launching the Climate Change Research Network, the Ministry will work, in cooperation With its strategic partners and academic institutions in the country, to create an information base on climate changes that we are witnessing locally. It will also stimulate and increase the pace of preparing research and studies specialized in this field, through cooperation with specialists and academics in local institutions.

He added: “The ability of countries to deal with the most step-by-step challenge for the future of mankind and the planet, the challenge of climate change, is related to the extent of their knowledge of the effects and repercussions of this change in their sectors and local components, so the network represents a strong supporter to confront this change, reduce its causes, reduce its repercussions, and enhance the capabilities of Adapt to it ».

Climate Research

The network will contribute to drawing and defining the priority and required climate research agenda in the UAE, and it will also provide an opportunity for climate specialists and researchers to communicate and collaborate, through a common base that provides permanently updated data and information, which enhances their ability to research and study.

During the same session, the minister revealed the launch of the first version of the report on the state of the climate in the UAE, which provides an introduction to the state of awareness of climate change and its effects in the country.

By launching the report, the Ministry seeks to provide a better understanding of the historical and expected changes related to climate in the UAE and the region, and their potential impacts, based on a comprehensive review of research in the field of climate change related to the region.

The opening meeting

The "launch and inaugural meeting of the Emirates Network for Climate Change Research" has attracted the participation of more than 40 climate researchers from the UAE, in addition to a number of representatives of relevant government agencies.
