China's economy grew in 2020 despite the corona pandemic.

The statistics office in Beijing announced on Monday that there was an increase of 2.3 percent for the past year.

In 2019 it was still enough for an increase of 6.1 percent.

The economy in China only contracted in the first quarter; the People's Republic already recorded growth again in the months of April to June.

In the last quarter of 2020 it was 6.5 percent compared to the same period last year, it said on Monday.

Even if 2020 was the slowest growth in over four decades, according to previous forecasts, China is the only larger economy that did not shrink in 2020.

The country was hit particularly hard at the beginning of the year as the starting point of the pandemic, but unlike most other countries, it did not experience a second wave.

The virus was declared defeated as early as March and the economy started up again.

Global demand for Chinese-made face masks and other medical goods was also a driver of growth.

Exports were 3.6 percent higher than in the previous year, despite a customs dispute with the USA.
