Resulting from the merger of the PSA and Fiat-Chrysler groups, the Stellantis alliance goes public on Monday.

Called to become the world's fourth largest manufacturer, Stellantis will have to tackle Fiat.

Because if the Italian brand retains a strong image in the collective imagination, it has not been able to take the turn of the electric.

ANALYSIS

The birth has been official since Saturday: the "Stellantis" alliance, which now brings together the PSA and Fiat-Chrysler groups, is set to become the world's fourth manufacturer.

Monday morning, Stellantis went public in Paris and Milan, before an IPO in New York on Tuesday.

This new giant will have 14 brands to coexist, some very dynamic and others more in difficulty.

This is particularly the case of Fiat, which could very quickly benefit from this merger.

It is hardly the successful return of the Fiat 500 that shines on the Italian manufacturer's charts in recent years.

Very few new models were produced, and Fiat factories are still very focused on heat engines, so much so that the manufacturer had to buy Tesla "CO2 credits" to avoid paying a fine in 2020.

"A brand that remains emblematic"

Relaunching the brand and making it the bridgehead of Stellantis for the European market, with the French Peugeot of course, will be one of the first challenges for Carlos Tavares, the big boss of this new group.

"Fiat was perhaps the weak point of the Fiat-Chrysler group, insofar as there has been little technological progress and modernization of factories, with a certain delay for the electric", points to Europe 1 José Baghdad, automotive expert at PwC.

"However, Fiat has a very strong image. It is the stake of the alliance to make shine a brand which remains emblematic in the imagination of all, and romantic in certain respects."

The Italian brand should be among the first to fully benefit from the synergies allowed by this merger: a small Fiat SUV will thus see the light of day in 2023 and it will come out of a PSA platform, currently used for the 208, C3 or Corsa.
