Prices at the pump can now be expressed per 100 km, in addition to the price per liter.

You may not have noticed it yet, but there is a change at the gas station.

And it is on the side of the price display at the pump that we must look for this small revolution.

A European directive on energy transition in transport wanted to establish a common method for comparing the prices of alternative fuels.

And this measure has been applicable since December 7, 2020 throughout the European Union.

Data to put into perspective

Usually the price of diesel, gasoline, LPG is expressed in liters (euros / L).

But now a second indicator, this time based on the distance traveled, can be added as a supplement.

The price is then indicated in euros / 100 km.

And at the time of testing, the majority of the cleanest fuels are the winners.

According to the comparison published in December 2020 by the French government, driving electrically costs 2.90 euros / 100 km, against 6.30 euros for diesel, 6.70 for compressed natural gas, 7.10 for LPG, 8.40 for E10 petrol and 11.30 for hydrogen.

Although the objective is to support the development of clean mobility by emphasizing the economic interest of alternative fuels, the figures announced must be put into perspective.

Indeed, these fares per distance are calculated by taking the average consumption of the three vehicles the most sold by fuel the year preceding the display.

The number obtained is then multiplied by the average fuel price over the three months preceding the renewal of the posters.

If it has the merit of existing, this indicator is therefore far from providing a precise figure.
