Government and social agents are meeting this Friday to explore an agreement that allows the extension of the ERTE, the social protection formula for companies and workers in the face of the health crisis, which in Spain would already go through the beginning of a third wave.

In parallel to this meeting of a technical nature, the president of the CEOE, Antonio Garamendi, has introduced a new topic of discussion in an interview in which, not only has he defended the extension of the temporary employment regulation files at least until June , but has also claimed that the different companies can adjust their workforce by returning ERTE exemptions to Social Security

according to each dismissed worker

, instead of for all their workforce.

"Whether we like it or not, there will have to be staff adjustments. This is no longer March and companies have solvency problems. What cannot be is that [companies that lay off] are forced to return all exemptions for have taken part in an ERTE, when it

would be more logical to return the part of that person who could go out

, because, if not, instead of consolidating jobs, we are going to destroy many more, "said the employer's leader in a interview in Onda Cero, precisely the day that the extension of the ERTE is negotiated

beyond January 31

, the current expiration date.

Pepe Álvarez, secretary general of the UGT, for his part, has starred in a press conference in which he warned that "it is not possible to put economy before health", in his opinion, "a false dilemma".

This Friday's meeting brings together social agents and representatives of the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy led by Yolanda Díaz.

The Secretary of State for Labor and Social Economy, Joaquín Pérez Rey, has spoken about his forecasts, which do not include "enormous changes" with respect to the current ERTE model.

Díaz

, for his part, has asked for the procedures to be accelerated to sign an extension as soon as possible, and

has

also

pointed out the employer's association as the main responsible for running out of time

in each of these negotiations to extend this social shield.

Coincidence in the need to extend them

Among the social agents, Álvarez has appeared to claim the ERTE as "an extraordinarily positive instrument to fight with the destruction of employment", for which he calls for an "immediate" extension to give stability to companies and workers: "If it can be Today, let's get up with an agreement. We did not want to reach the month of January with this issue. We wanted it to have been resolved in September, because the ERTE should last for the duration of the pandemic. Therefore, the extensions should be automatic ", The Secretary General of the UGT has expressed, who has asked

the Government "not to take any rabbit out of the hat" and the CEOE "to follow the European canons

and not ask for anything that their French or Italian colleagues do not ask."

The change that Garamendi asks for

Companies that take advantage of ERTE are obliged to maintain employment for the six months after the return of activity.

A breach in this sense implies having to return all the exemptions to Social Security, beyond the exemptions corresponding to the dismissed employees.

For Garamendi, it is "illusory" to believe that Spanish companies are going to keep the entire workforce if they cannot resume the activity, so that it is convenient "to protect the business world".
