  • According to industry professionals, the coronavirus has cost 30,000 jobs in the aviation industry.

  • But they also believe that without measures such as EMPs or long-term partial unemployment, the damage could have been twice as great.

Some 5,000 jobs lost at the giant Airbus, 475 at the equipment manufacturer Latécoère or even 679 at Daher ... to name a few.

By causing a lasting paralysis of air traffic, the health crisis linked to the epidemic of the new coronavirus has hit the aircraft construction industry hard.

And the time has come to make a first inventory of the damage for professionals in the sector: "We had approximately 60,000 jobs threatened in 2020-2021 and we believe that we have already been able to save half of them, that is to say - say 30,000 people, ”said Thursday Eric Trappier, president of the Group of French aeronautical and space industries (Gifas), which weighs 202,000 employees.

The recovery is urgent

The one who is also CEO of Dassault Aviation believes that the emergency measures decided by the State could limit the massive social plans.

“This will obviously depend on the duration of the crisis and when the recovery will take place.

But thanks to long-term partial unemployment, we must be able to preserve these figures I am talking about provided that this recovery happens somewhere in 2021, ”continued the sector representative.

For Christophe Cador, chairman of the Aero-PME committee of Gifas, there have been “very few business failures or collective procedures” for the time being, among subcontractors.

Even if, he adds, "that does not mean that there will be no procedures to come".

For him also, "the State measures were fundamental", whether it is about loans guaranteed by the State (PGE) special aeronautics, making it possible to finance stocks, support funds put in place.

In its rescue plan, the State also decided to devote 1.5 billion over three years to the development of low-carbon aircraft.
