Cold protection in vegetable market

Early in the early morning of New Year's Day in 2021, the Beijing Xinfadi Agricultural Products Wholesale Market was bustling with a steady stream of vendors who came to wholesale vegetables and fruits, and the security guards’ prompts of “wear masks and keep your distance” sounded again and again.

Liu Tong, director of the Statistics Department of Beijing Xinfadi Agricultural Products Wholesale Market, told reporters that the strong cold wave has had a significant impact on the production and transportation of vegetables, and vegetable prices have risen significantly recently.

For example, Chinese cabbage in Tai'an and Zaozhuang in Shandong was harvested in large quantities. Due to snowfall, harvesting activities temporarily stopped, leading to an increase in the price of Chinese cabbage on the market.

The price of tomatoes produced in greenhouses in the north has basically remained stable.

Because tomatoes in Baoshan, Xishuangbanna, Yuanmou, and Panzhihua in Sichuan have been expanded to varying degrees, greenhouse tomatoes in northern regions have also been expanded, making the price of tomatoes stable under the attack of strong cold waves.

Since last week, the supply of vegetables on the Beijing market has completely entered the winter mode.

"It is a normal phenomenon that vegetable prices in winter are higher than summer and autumn prices in Beijing. Vegetable prices increase this week is also a normal phenomenon." The relevant person in charge of Xinfadi Market analyzed that the current prices are higher than the same period last year, mainly because Due to the insufficient planting area of summer vegetables, this state will continue into spring, and then the price of vegetables will gradually return to the level of the same period of the year.
