The Department of Economic Development in Abu Dhabi has allowed the owners and managers of authorized cafes and restaurants to re-provide shisha services at the emirate level, in accordance with specific requirements set by the department, with a commitment to apply precautionary measures to prevent the emerging corona virus (Covid-19).

The department clarified in a circular issued yesterday that it is permissible to use only single-use hookah hoses made of plastic, while isolating the smokers' area from "non-smokers", and intensifying cleaning patrols in smoking areas.

Abu Dhabi Economy stressed the need not to allow café workers to experiment with hookah before serving, with the necessity to adhere to following all precautionary measures and measures in place to prevent “Covid-19”.

On March 11, 2020, the Department of Economic Development in Abu Dhabi directed all licensed hookah cafes in the emirate to refrain from serving hookah in their facilities immediately and urgently.

And in a circular issued at the time, she warned that intensive inspection campaigns would be carried out to verify compliance with the decision that comes within the framework of precautionary measures to combat the emerging "Corona" virus.

The department’s agent, Rashid Al Balushi, told Emirates Today: “Those violating the decision will be subject to penalties that start with a warning, then financial fines, and go up to closing for specific periods, according to the violation.”

The requirements include the single use of plastic hookah hoses only.
