In Syria, the explosion of a vehicle bomb near a Russian base in the province of Raqqa, in the north of the country, left soldiers wounded.
This is the second attack on the Russian military this week.

The attack, claimed by the jihadist group “The Guardians of Religion”, was carried out by two men who parked a van loaded with explosives at the entrance to a Russian base in Raqqa province.
After opening fire in the direction of the military position, the two attackers detonated the bomb which caused damage and injured people, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The attack occurred in an area controlled by Kurdish militias, but where Syrian government troops and the Russian army are deployed.
A few days ago, Russian troops had routed large reinforcements to the base targeted to intervene between Kurdish militias and pro-Turkish rebels, in the town of Aïn Issa, further north.
Three Russian soldiers had already been injured on December 29
This is the first time that the “Guardians of the Religion”, considered the branch of al-Qaeda in Syria, have claimed responsibility for an attack on the Russian army.
On December 29, 2020, three Russian soldiers were wounded when their armored vehicle was hit by an anti-tank missile in Idleb province, where jihadist groups are well established.
For ten days, the Russian air force has intensified its raids against jihadist strongholds in the mountains of the coastal province of Latakia, where extremists of the Islamic Party of Turkestan are deployed.
