The smartphone world is not just made up of Apple, Samsung and Huawei.

Long traded as an insider tip, Oneplus is currently conquering the top five of the European sales charts.

The Chinese manufacturer advertises top technology at a fair price - a promise that was put to the test in a practical test lasting several weeks.

Even at first glance, the Oneplus 8T looks modern and well-styled, because the screen edge is extremely thin.

The device is framed with a high-quality aluminum frame, the main camera now protrudes as with most other smartphones as a rectangle at the top left on the back - previously Oneplus had always placed the camera in the middle.

The manufacturer justifies the change with improved cooling and antenna technology.

The device is very well made and feels good.

At 188 grams it is also relatively light.

The display itself is 6.55 inches in size and offers Full HD Plus resolution (2400 by 1080 pixels with 402 ppi pixel density).

Oneplus uses a flexible and extremely thin AMOLED display panel, which is noticeable in everyday life.

Oneplus 8T: thin device, thick battery

For one thing, the device is pleasantly thin overall, although the electronic components for screen control are also stowed behind the display.

This design also helps to ensure that the lower edge of the screen - the "chin" - is no longer as wide on the 8T as on the previous model.

And finally, the AMOLED screen displays the colors beautifully and accurately - and not overly colorful, like many competitors from China.

The 8T can also boast another top value: the refresh rate of 120 Hertz - not even the current iPhone model can match that.

Web pages in the browser and scenes in computer games scroll smoothly across the screen.

The main processor Snapdragon 865 and the eight or twelve gigabytes (GB) of new UFS 3.1 working memory (RAM) also contribute to the performance.

There is a lot of light, but also a little shadow, in the charging technology: For one thing, Oneplus has given the 8T a large battery with 4500 mAh.

You can easily get through the day with it.

The real highlight, however, is the “Warp Charge 65” charger, which charges the 8T to 35 percent in ten minutes and fully charges in just under 40 minutes.

That is sensationally good and shows that there is still a lot of room for innovation when it comes to charging technology.

Oneplus 8T with quadruple camera without telephoto

The current 8T has a quadruple camera.

Their wide angle offers a maximum resolution of 48 megapixels and is optically stabilized.

The ultra-wide angle optics capture image information with a resolution of 16 megapixels.

So far nothing has changed compared to the previous model.

The macro camera, which now offers 5 megapixels, has been slightly improved.

A new feature is a monochrome camera that collects image information for the depth sensor.

But there is no telescope.

The 8T captures excellent photos and videos in good daylight, but the main camera starts to rustle a little in low light.

Images and videos that are taken in the same environment with a Pixel 5 or an iPhone 12 look better.

The 8T's bokeh effect leaves a mixed impression.

With photos, this usually results in professional-looking portraits, but with videos it occasionally frays the edges.

Oneplus 8T has Android 11 on board

Similar to the buyer of a Pixel 5 from Google, Oneplus customers benefit from the current Android software.

The 8T is shipped from the factory with the new Android 11.

Oneplus sets its own accents with its own user interface Oxygen OS, which looks modern, tidy and not "messed up".

The 8T also meets the current requirements in terms of radio technology.

5G cellular, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 are supported.

Of the items on the wish list, however, there is no certified IP protection against water and dust.

The Oneplus 8T is sold in green and silver.

The version with eight GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage costs 600 euros.

The version with twelve GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage (only in green) is 100 euros more expensive.

Conclusion:

The Oneplus 8T is interesting for smartphone users who are not prepared to spend 1000 euros or more on a mobile phone.

Sometimes you get cutting-edge technology that is not even found in high-end models.

If you mainly use your smartphone as a photo camera, you should better use Google's Pixel 5.
