VW Arteon Shooting Brake -

DR

As its name suggests, the Arteon Shooting Brake is a so-called "hunting" station wagon, or a station wagon whose design and dynamism take precedence over practical aspects.

The rear part is therefore particularly elegant, with a very plunging bezel and a limited height which gives it a particularly stretched look, even if its length remains identical to that of the sedan (4.87 m).

This explains why the volume under the trunk shelf does not progress much: only 2 small liters, or 565 liters all the same.

The wide door obviously facilitates accessibility, but the fairly high loading threshold and the absence of a repositionable floor confirm that practicality is not the raison d'être of this Shooting Brake.

It will also be necessary to take into account the very profiled tailgate which can be awkward when loading bulky objects.

The rear passages are particularly spoiled by the legroom they take advantage of.

The Arteon has just received a slight facelift that the station wagon obviously immediately adopts.

Aesthetically, this is especially noticeable at the level of the redesigned shields and the grille, which now incorporates a light ring over its entire width.

The interior also received some touch-ups, starting with the customizable Digital Cockpit Pro screen delivered as standard instead of the traditional counters.

The big VW is also giving way to the touchscreen fashion, whether for steering wheel controls or for air conditioning management.

In both cases, this mania to remove physical controls at all costs is still struggling to really convince us to use it.

A great road

The Arteon takes advantage of new technological equipment, in particular reinforced driving aids.

This aesthetic refreshment is also accompanied by an expansion of the mechanical offer.

The Arteon will very soon be offered with a plug-in hybrid engine of 245 hp, and a nasty R finish powered by a 2.0l 320 hp.

While waiting to take charge of these new hearts, it is the 190 horsepower version of this same 2.0l block that equips our test car.

For information, the catalog also includes a TDI 150 hp.

Despite its generous power, it does not change the station wagon into a sports car.

Its revs are very linear, maximum power is reached at 5,000 rpm already, and the 7-speed DSG gearbox is a little lazy in the pick-ups and acceleration.

Conversely, she is very gentle in the sequence of reports.

It thus goes very well with the “long-haul” character of the station wagon which, without too much surprise, retains the same road neutrality as the Passat from which it derives.

This therefore means that the comfort is of an excellent level despite the 20-inch rims of our test car, and that the consumption is surprising in view of the power developed: less than 7l / 100km on a rolling course, when Volkswagen announces 7.6l / 100km in the WLTP combined cycle.

The Arteon Shooting Brake is available from € 47,590.
