The academician roundtable focuses on integrated circuits: based on "chai, rice, oil and salt", chasing "stars and seas"

Xinhua News Agency, Shanghai, December 19 (Reporter Zhou Lin) Can the advanced technology of 7nm and 5nm make a breakthrough?

Can high-end lithography equipment be "made in China"?

What are the aspects of card neck technology?

In the next few years, where is the "China Chip" most likely to make breakthroughs?

The China (Shanghai) Integrated Circuit Innovation Summit Academician Roundtable Conference was held in Shanghai on the 17th. Many experts, academicians, and industry professionals said that the development of China’s integrated circuits is a "multiple choice topic": The market has recently solved problems and actively integrated into the global ecology. It is also necessary to catch up with the "stars and seas", work harder on cutting-edge technology and basic research, and increase investment and continuous deployment in new devices, new materials, and new processes.

Demand-oriented, innovation in the "closest to the market"

Many academicians have given their own answers to the areas where the public is most concerned about the most likely breakthrough in China's integrated circuit industry, and the commonality of the answers is: close to the market and close to demand.

"Where are the areas where China's integrated circuit technology is most likely to break through in the past two years? Simply put, the most profitable place is where technology is most likely to break through. It does not lie in whether the technology is the most advanced or not. The big market is the most active development in the future. Local area.” said Hao Yue, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and director of the Information Science Department of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, that China’s integrated circuit industry technology has been catching up. Among the three major directions of future technology, the chip size will continue to shrink, the density will continue to increase, and R&D will introduce more New materials and so on, the latter two have a lot of room for innovation and action in China.

Wu Hanming, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and dean of the School of Micro-Nanoelectronics at Zhejiang University, said that looking back on the development of integrated circuits for nearly 20 years, many innovative leading technologies have to be replaced with new technologies when the industry is desperate, which has promoted technological progress. .

Integrated circuit research and development should be guided by industrial technology, and scientific research projects should actively serve industry needs.

"The culture of industrial technology leading the development of science and technology must be established, and we must persist in doing it faster and deeper."

Advanced technology and lithography machines are not "the only ones", but to solve practical problems down-to-earth

It is undeniable that we still have a certain gap compared with the world's most advanced level in advanced manufacturing processes such as 5nm, 3nm, and extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV).

Zhang Suxin, chairman of Shanghai Huahong (Group) Co., Ltd., believes that the innovation of the industrial chain is not limited to the iteration of advanced processes, but has been solving specific application problems.

"Extensive demand has caused obstacles to the production capacity supply chain, which in itself shows that the industrial chain is constantly solving problems, finding new applications and demands, and providing follow-up capacity guarantees."

Lithography machines and advanced technology are not the "all" of the integrated circuit industry. We still need to be down-to-earth to solve practical problems and do what we can do well.

"On different occasions, people will put forward different points of view: the business world will say that so many changes and innovations are of no use to me, and the problems in front of me have not been solved; in the scientific and technological world, they say that they can’t follow this way every day. There is something new." Ye Tianchun, Chief Technical Officer of the National Science and Technology Major Project (02), said that the development of China's integrated circuits is not to do such "multiple choice questions", but to consider all things in front of the industry. Matters, medium and long-term innovation, and even more long-term frontier technology research must be resolved.

Some areas of "keeping the bottom line" must be persisted for a long period of time, and innovations of "alternative paths" must also be actively explored, and both hands must be firm.

Rather than expect a single-point breakthrough, it is better to let the overall market progress and drive systemic development.

Wei Shaojun, the leader of the National Science and Technology Major Project (01) Special Expert Group and a professor at the Institute of Microelectronics of Tsinghua University, said that integrated circuits are a system-wide industry.

"my country's integrated circuit industry has achieved double-digit annual growth rates for many years, even this year's special circumstances are no exception. Doing a good market is the key."

Respect the laws of the industry, abandon the "impetuous" mentality, and integrate into the global ecology

Experts believe that the development of integrated circuits has its own industrial rules. The production line is not simply a matter of "smashing in" the capital, and it can be solved with a few big coffees. It is still necessary to have long-term investment and the perseverance of "fixing the green hills". It is necessary to have a comprehensive understanding of the complexity of integrated circuit manufacturing and respect the laws of industrial development.

More importantly, a new ecology of global innovation is taking shape, and China can become an irreplaceable part of it.

"The new international cooperation ecology should be taken into consideration." Ye Tianchun said, can we establish better cooperative relations with Japan, South Korea, and other European countries? Can there be new policies for such cooperation and better support in China. The development of independent sales of foreign-owned holding companies without restriction?

In the face of competition, China may be able to set up a new global cooperation ecosystem that "mainly depends on me and does not depend on a certain country", leading the new direction of globalization.

Ma Xingfa, Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and Vice Chairman of the Shanghai Association for Science and Technology, stated that it is of great significance to convene this academician round table in the context of the current state taking integrated circuits as the main direction of attack and accelerating technological innovation and industrial development.

The Academician Roundtable Conference is a high-end academic exchange brand created by the Shanghai Association for Science and Technology. It is committed to building a high-end scientific and technological think tank and a platform for the exchange of ideas based on Shanghai, radiating domestically and internationally, featuring innovation.
