According to a statistical survey of 31 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) across the country (the sown area of ​​cotton in Xinjiang was obtained through remote sensing measurement), the total cotton output in 2020 was 5.91 million tons, an increase of 21,000 tons or 0.4% over 2019.

  Li Suoqiang, director of the Rural Department of the National Bureau of Statistics, interpreted the cotton production situation and stated that the country's cotton sown area has declined and the yield has increased.

  In 2020, the national cotton sown area was 316.9 thousand hectares (47.548 million mu), a decrease of 16.94 thousand hectares (2.541 million mu) from 2019, a decrease of 5.1%.

The national cotton yield per unit area was 1864.5 kg/ha (124.3 kg/mu), an increase of 100.9 kg/ha (6.7 kg/mu) over 2019, an increase of 5.7%.

The sown area of ​​cotton in the Yangtze River Basin was 283.8 thousand hectares (4.257 million mu), a decrease of 56.7 thousand hectares (85 million mu) from the previous year, a decrease of 16.6%; the sown area of ​​cotton in the Yellow River Basin was 358.9 thousand hectares (5.383 million mu), a decrease of 16.6%. Last year, it decreased by 69.9 thousand hectares (1.049 million mu), down 16.3%.

  According to Li Suoqiang's analysis, the national cotton yield per unit area in 2020 is 1864.5 kg/ha (124.3 kg/mu), an increase of 100.9 kg/ha (6.7 kg/mu) over the previous year, an increase of 5.7%. The climatic conditions in Xinjiang’s cotton area are relatively suitable, the occurrence of pests and diseases is relatively light, and the growth of cotton is good. The cotton yield per unit area is 2062.7 kg/ha (137.5 kg/mu), an increase of 93.8 kg/ha (6.3 kg/mu) over the previous year, an increase of 4.8 %. Therefore, Xinjiang's cotton production increased by 159,000 tons over the previous year, an increase of 3.2%. The cotton area in the Yangtze River Basin was affected by floods and the cotton yield per unit area was 1011.1 kg/ha (67.4 kg/mu), a decrease of 53.4 kg/ha (3.6 kg/mu) from the previous year, a decrease of 5.0%; the cotton area in the Yellow River Basin The yield was 1175.0 kg/ha (78.3 kg/mu), an increase of 57.3 kg/ha (3.8 kg/mu) over the previous year, an increase of 5.1%.
