More and more manufacturers are equipping their smartphones with the fast 5G cellular standard.

However, this is usually withheld from the high-priced models - not so with Realme.

With the Realme 7 5G, the Chinese company is launching a smartphone for less than 300 euros that is suitable for 5G.

“Computer Bild” takes the practical test.

Who is Realme?

In addition to Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo, Realme is one of those Chinese smartphone manufacturers that are now also triumphing in this country.

“Computer Bild” had the opportunity to talk to Madhav Sheth, head of Realme Europe, about plans for the German market.

Accordingly, Realme wants to distinguish itself in all price ranges with its own smartphones - and delight technology fans with features that are by no means always available at the respective price.

The new 5G technology is an important point, because, according to Madhav Sheth: “We want to democratize 5G.” The Realme 7 5G plays an important role here.

Realme 7 5G: design and display

The tested Realme 7 5G has a color gradient on the back that stands out from the usual smartphone colors.

It is made of plastic, the side frame of aluminum.

The smartphone looks well made, but if you pick it up for the first time, you should be careful because: The edges are uncomfortable, almost sharp, the applied film reinforces the feeling.

A cover is included, but it is very difficult to attach.

The power button is embedded in a hollow on the right-hand side and houses the fingerprint sensor.

The Realme 7 5G has an LCD display that is 6.5 inches in size.

This covers almost the entire front, only the hole for the selfie camera interrupts it.

It gets dark quickly if you look from the side.

In comparison with other smartphones, a red tinge is noticeable.

This affects the way the photos are viewed.

For an even smoother presentation, the Realme offers a 120 Hertz mode for the display - but this saps the battery power.

Compared to the Samsung Galaxy A51, for example, the better scrollability is immediately noticeable.

Protruding camera

display

Realme has installed four lenses on the back of the 7 5G.

They protrude something that causes wobbles when lying on the table.

The selfie camera has 16 megapixels (MP) and takes decent pictures with it.

Portrait mode reliably blurs the background.

In addition to the ultra-wide angle with 8 MP and the macro lens, the Realme 7 5G has a 48 MP main camera.

Photos taken in daylight look neat, the wide-angle lens cuts a fine figure.

The zoom is not that convincing: If the double is still okay, with the five-fold you notice that there is no top model at the start - the picture looks muddy.

The full power of the 48 MP lens can be used in a separate mode.

Here the images are sharp, but you can only see a real difference to normal mode if you look closely.

Realme 7 5G is faster than the competition

In the Realme 7 5G, the Mediatek “Dimensity 800U” processor works with 6 gigabytes (GB) of RAM.

That ensures a brisk working pace in everyday life.

The Realme 7 5G achieved 599 and 1790 points (single-core and multi-core) in Geekbench.

This makes it stronger than the Samsung Galaxy A51 and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro, which are popular in this price range.

The internal memory of 128 GB can be expanded with a memory card, so you have to do without a second SIM card.

The option to 5G can be used with corresponding 5G tariffs, it makes the Realme 7 5G more future-proof.

Battery with great charging power

At 5000 mAh, the Realme 7 5G's battery is very large.

According to the manufacturer, it can withstand one day.

If it is empty faster, that's not a big deal, Realme packs a 30 watt charger.

The smartphone should be fully charged again within 65 minutes.

That is definitely a bonus.

Realme promises two years of updates

display

The Realme 7 5G currently runs on Android 10. Madhav Sheth emphasized the high priority of software updates in the “Computer Bild” conversation.

Smartphones like the Realme 7 5G should receive new security updates every two months.

For comparison: Monthly security updates are usually only offered by expensive smartphones, such as top Samsung models like the Galaxy S20, Google devices like the Pixel 5 or some Nokia smartphones.

In this respect, the bi-monthly cycle is better than usual in the market in terms of price.

There should also be major Android updates for two years after they appear.

Thus, owners of the Realme 7 5G can look forward not only to an Android 11 update, but also to Android 12.

Conclusion:

The Realme 7 5G is a cheap model with good technology.

The processor in particular competes with the middle class of the major manufacturers.

The large battery and the 30 watt charger ensure sufficient power.

The camera and the display were not completely convincing.

For the price, the Realme 7 5G is a decent device.

Strengths:

large battery, powerful charger, 120 Hertz display, large screen

Weaknesses:

Camera with weaknesses, uncomfortable edges, display with a red cast, memory expansion only without dual SIM

Assessment:

satisfactory

Price and availability:

The Realme 7 5G is available for 279 euros (RRP).

The device is only available in the color Baltic Blue with a gradient.
