A health check from the start-up Wellabe is quicker than going to the doctor.

The Munich-based company wants to improve corporate health management.

The market, in which several start-ups are active, is competitive.

"We drive our mobile laboratories to companies," explains founder Michael Theodossiou.

“The employees receive a 15-minute check-up.” According to its own information, the start-up has already carried out more than 10,000 such tests on customers such as Deutsche Bahn, the insurance company Allianz and the automotive supplier ZF.

The start-up's employees record several health values: “We take a few drops of capillary blood from our fingers, with which we test ten blood values, including blood sugar and blood lipids such as cholesterol.

They reflect personal lifestyle, habits and eating habits. "

Blood pressure and the elasticity of vessels are also measured, as well as lung function and the ability of the spine to rotate.

It's also about mental health: "We have also integrated a stress measurement," says the founder.

It measures how the pulse changes when employees are given a task.

Validated questionnaires are also evaluated.

The test is only part of the offer: the employees should take action themselves.

“You see the data directly on your smartphone and, if you are interested, can discuss the results with a doctor via video chat.

In the further course we recommend digital prevention programs for a sustainable lifestyle change, ”says Michael Theodossiou.

"This gives us the chance to identify risk factors at an early stage and to protect them from diseases of civilization that are on the rise."

Every third person has problems

The start-up manages to win an average of up to 50 percent of the workforce for such a check-up.

“30 percent of the users who take part in the check-ups have health problems or deficits.

Among them are many who did not know about it. "

As Theodossiou says, the check-ups are well received in the companies.

"We achieve a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 80." This is a value that shows the willingness of users to recommend the offer to others.

The key figure can be between minus 100 and plus 100.

Employers buy the service for their employees.

They invest in this measure for several reasons: "It is worthwhile for employers because they have more loyal and healthier employees and because they can see how health is developing in the company."

Of course, they also know that healthy employees are more productive.

In addition, care for physical and mental health at work is stipulated in the Occupational Safety and Health Act.

Three million euros for Wellabe in the A round

Now the Munich start-up has completed a Series A financing round of three million euros.

In addition to the previous shareholders Earlybird, Paua Ventures and Plug and Play, the investors in the new financing round also include the third-largest private clinic operator in Germany, Sana Kliniken.

The start-up wants to use the capital to attract more users and improve its digital prevention offers.

Users with medical care needs should be referred to specialists or receive digital therapeutics (“apps on prescription”), for example as nutritional advice.

In addition, the cooperation with health insurance companies and private insurers is to be expanded.

Clinic operator Sana as a strategic Wellabe investor

The start-up sees the hospital operator Sana as a strategic investor as a stroke of luck.

It hopes to be able to fall back on its infrastructure and gain access to prevention centers and new patient groups.

For the Sana Kliniken, the collaboration is a further step in the direction of a digitized, holistic "patient journey" - that is, a patient's path through the various stations of the health system.

The cooperation with Wellabe offers a new way of reaching new target groups and digitally accompanying people on their way to a healthier lifestyle, explains Sana CEO Thomas Lemke.

Numerous competitors at the start

Wellabe is not the only start-up in Germany that is active in corporate health management:

- Dear Employee, a seven-digit funded start-up, helps companies recognize the psychological stress on their employees and take preventive measures against burnout.

Online questionnaires are evaluated for this purpose.

- Humanoo pursues a different strategy: employees can track their sporting activities there.

Using an app, users receive personalized exercise programs from physiotherapy, fitness, yoga and meditation.

- Mila.health would like to increase mental health in the workplace and has concluded a preseed round worth almost one million euros.

Early-stage investor Atlantic Labs led the way.

The offers range from video sessions with a psychologist to digital, self-guided trainings and tools.

- TheCalmBase is a marketplace for time-outs and mindfulness, and sees its future in corporate health management.

Founded by Carolin von Michaelis, who sold her first start-up to Airbnb, the start-up wants to gain a foothold in corporate wellbeing.

It arranges workshops and retreats for yoga and meditation.
