The proportion of newlyweds who did not have children until their fifth year of marriage increased to one in five couples, the highest ever.

According to statistics on newlyweds from the National Statistical Office, among newlyweds for the fifth year of marriage last year, 18.3% of newlyweds had no children, accounting for the largest share since 2015 when related statistics were prepared.

Until 2015, the proportion of newlyweds with no children in their fifth year was only 12.9%, but this proportion is increasing every year to 13.7% in 2016, 14.9% in 2017, and 16.8% in 2018.

This is attributed to the increased number of'dinks' who do not have children on their own, along with inevitable factors such as infertility.

Kim Jin, head of the Statistical Office's Administrative Statistics Division, explained, "If you marry late and become an older mother, childbirth itself is difficult, and there are effects from recent couples not having children.

In fact, according to a special estimate of future households released by the National Statistical Office last year, the proportion of married households consisting of only two couples among the total households will increase from 15.8% in 2017 (3093,000 households) to 21.5% (4794,000 households) in 2047. Was expected.

On the other hand, the statistics office predicted that the share of the most common couple + children households at present will decrease from 31.4% (6.11 million households) in 2017 to 16.3% (3638,000 households) in 2047.

On the other hand, among all newlyweds in the first to fifth years of marriage, 42.5% of all newlyweds had no children.

As of last year, 4 out of 10 newlywed couples in the 1st to 5th years had no children.

The proportion of newlyweds without children is also the highest since related statistics were written.

In addition, the number of newlyweds itself is also decreasing.

As of November 1, last year, newlywed couples residing in Korea who reported marriage within the last five years totaled 1.26 million, a decrease of 62,000 (4.7%) from the previous year.

Compared to the previous year, the decline in newlyweds increased from -2.4% in 2016 to -4.0% in 2017, -4.2% in 2018, and -4.7% in 2019, the largest since the relevant statistics were written.
