An explosion in an oil tanker off the coast of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

The Havnia Shipping Company said today, Monday, that one of its oil tankers was hit by an unknown "external source", which caused a fire and an explosion during the unloading of the ship in the port of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.

"PW Rain was injured from an external source while unloading in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, at around 00:40 local time on December 14, 2020, causing an explosion and subsequent fire on board," Havnia said in a statement on its website.

The company said that the crew put out the fire and no one was injured.

She added that parts of the ship's hull were damaged.

"It is possible that some oil has leaked from the ship, but this has not been confirmed, and the devices now indicate that the oil levels on board the ship are at the same level they were before the accident," said Havnia.

According to the Havnia data and the freight data on Refinitiv, BW Ryan, owned and operated by the Havnia company, flies the Singapore flag and can carry between 60,000 and 80,000 tons of light and medium distilled petroleum products.

The data showed that the tanker had loaded about 60,000 tons of gasoline from the port of Yanbu on December 6, and that it was currently 84 percent full.
