In the West Bank, one of the leading figures of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Dr Hanan Ashrawi, has resigned.

She had given her letter of resignation to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at the end of November who accepted it this Wednesday evening.

A way of protesting against the resumption of cooperation between Israelis and Palestinians stopped for six months, then resumed on November 17.

Hanan Ashrawi was a highly respected figure in Palestinian politics.

At 74, she was one of the only female politicians to hold such a high post in the Palestinian Authority.

She had been a member of the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization since 2009. And she gained international recognition at the Madrid conference in 1991 where she was the spokesperson for the Palestinian delegation.

Call for urgent democratic elections

If her resignation is a way of criticizing the resumption of coordination with Israel, it is also, she hopes, a way of carrying out a reform of the PLO, the organization which signed the Agreements of. Oslo: “

The Palestinian political system needs a renewal, needs to be reinvigorated by including young people, women and qualified professionals,

” she wrote in her letter.

She also criticizes the quarrels between the Fatah and Hamas factions that divide Palestinian unity.

It thus reiterates the urgent need for democratic elections.

The task will be complicated, because the Palestinian Authority seems to have resumed its old strategy since the victory of Joe Biden and does not seem to talk about elections in the short term.
