The US electric car manufacturer Tesla has to stop clearing a forest area in Grünheide near Berlin for the time being.

The administrative court in Frankfurt (Oder) issued a preliminary stop to deforestation on Monday evening, as the court announced.

The administrative court has not yet made a final decision on the matter.

The environmental associations NABU and the Green League had submitted an urgent application.

This is directed against the early approval of the felling of a further 82.9 hectares of forest on the property in Grünheide near Berlin intended for the Tesla factory.

Tesla did not comment at first.

The “Tagesspiegel” and the rbb had previously reported.

For the Tesla Gigafactory - here a construction site photo from February - many hectares of forest have to be cleared.

Environmentalists consider the time for effective conservation measures to be too short

"Since it can be assumed that the clearing of the 82.9 hectares of forest will only take a few days, further waiting with the present decision would therefore practically lead to a settlement of the present legal dispute", it said in the court order.

A final decision is still pending.

The request of the environmental associations, which are concerned about animals such as sand lizards and smooth snakes, to finally stop further felling work is not obviously unfounded.
