In order to have the right to continue driving, motorists must periodically submit their vehicle to a check-up to ensure that it does not present any dangerous failure.

As a reminder, any passenger car weighing less than 3.5 tonnes must therefore undergo a technical inspection within 6 months of its fourth year of initial entry into service.

Some 133 checkpoints were thus scrutinized.

If there are no problems, the next check should be done two years later, and so on throughout its use.

But while security shouldn't be compromised, this verification comes at a cost.

Since the tightening of technical control in 2018, prices have skyrocketed.

According to a comparative study by the Simplauto.com website, the average price has thus fallen from 69 euros in 2017 to nearly 78 euros in 2018 for a diesel or gasoline car.

In addition, these figures hide significant geographical disparities, the amounts being able to climb by nearly 25% in Corsica, against + 19% in Haute-Savoie and + 13% in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.

An official price comparison

To encourage professionals in the sector to practice reasonable prices while preserving purchasing power, the government is betting on competition.

Several months after its announcement, the new official portal Prix-controle-technique.gouv.fr was put online on October 8, 2020, in order to compare the prices of these services.

In practice, all you need to do is enter your locality, the category of your vehicle and the type of fuel to obtain the list of approved centers in the municipality.

Each presentation includes the price of the control and that of the check-up.
