An airline that sheds 29,000 employees

The newspaper "Bild am Sonntag" reported today, that the number of workers who will be laid off by "Lufthansa" will reach 29 thousand by the end of 2020, adding that the German airline will cancel 10 thousand jobs inside the country next year while it combats the repercussions of the "Corona" virus.

The airline and its units, Euro-Wings, Swiss and Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines have reduced their flights, fleets and employees, amid expectations that air travel will not return to pre-pandemic levels until 2025.

"Bild am Sonntag", citing unnamed company sources, said that "Lufthansa" would cut 20 thousand jobs outside Germany, and would sell the catering unit "LSG" that employs 7,500 people, reducing the total number of its employees to 109 thousand.

The newspaper added that the company will cut another 10,000 jobs in Germany next year and that it has already spent 3 billion euros ($ 3.64 billion) in the 9 billion euros government aid it received earlier this year.
