The exchange of prisoners has become the rule in recent years.

This time around, Kylie Moore-Gilbert was exchanged for three Iranians detained abroad.

Iranian state media have not yet specified the identity of the three Iranians or in which countries they were being held.

Iranian television showed the image of the Australian-Briton but also of the three Iranians at the airport.

The faces of the three Iranians were hidden with masks and they were wearing caps.

One of them was in a wheelchair.

In recent years, Iran has exchanged prisoners with several countries, including Australia, France and the United States.

Last March, Iran exchanged

French researcher Roland Marchal

with an Iranian detained in France who was to be deported to the United States.

A prisoner exchange also took place between Iran and Australia.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said two months ago that Tehran was ready to exchange binational Iranian-American prisoners with Iranians held in the United States.

Franco-Iranian researcher Fariba Adelkhah and Iranian-British Nazanine Zagheri are still detained in Iran and could be the subject of prisoner exchanges.
