The municipality of Venice has decided to postpone until 2022 the implementation of its head tax for tourists, which was to come into force during the summer.

A postponement intended to try to restart an activity completely stopped.

"In light of the current situation, linked to the Covid-19 pandemic, we have decided to make an important gesture to promote the return of tourist flows," said Budget Deputy Michele Zuin in a press release. .

According to him, "it is a fair measure which is fully in line with the administration's strategic plan to revive the city's economy."

He specified that at the same time, "the development of software for the management of the reservation system was continuing" with a view to the implementation of the tax on January 1, 2022.

Italy hard hit by the health crisis

Venice has been deserted since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, which put a stop to air transport and tourism.

In Italy, tourism represents 13% of the GDP and 15% of jobs, but the economy of the City of the Doges is even more dependent on this sector.

Italy was the first European country to be hit in February by the coronavirus and paid a heavy price, with more than 1.3 million cases and nearly 48,000 deaths.

Its economy is expected to experience its worst recession this year since World War II.
