The Netherlands will ban the sale of this commodity from 2024

The Dutch government said on Friday that it will ban the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products in consumer goods stores from 2024 to urge more people to quit smoking.

With the imposition of a ban on cigarette vending machines from 2022 and the addition of a ban on selling them in stores, the government said this would eliminate 11,000 tobacco outlets out of 16,000 currently available in the country.

The sale of cigarettes in consumer goods stores currently accounts for about 55 percent of tobacco sales in the Netherlands.

Since 2008, the authorities in the Netherlands have banned smoking in bars and restaurants and removed designated smoking areas in train stations this year, with buildings housing business offices and companies to follow by 2022.
