Local authorities will be able to increase the tourist tax paid for overnight stays in Airbnb type tourist accommodation.

With the favorable opinion of the government, the deputies adopted Thursday an amendment to the 2021 budget project of Christophe Jerretie (MoDem) allowing the removal of a ceiling that applied.

The tourist tax can thus be reduced from 2.30 to 4.10 euros at most, the same threshold as for palaces.

It is a question of repairing an "inequity" with the hotels and also to be at the level of other European capitals, supported the general rapporteur Laurent Saint-Martin (LREM).

Pierre-Yves Bournazel (Agir), also adviser to Paris, also supported the amendment, "fair, relevant and very pragmatic".

The measure corresponds to a "legitimate request" from the mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo (PS), he added.

58 million euros in tourist tax in 2019

In France, the local authorities set the level of the tourist tax, between 1% and 5% of the price excluding tax of the night per person.

According to the latest figures known, some 28,000 cities collected 58 million euros in tourist tax on tourist rentals in 2019 via the Airbnb platform, more than double the amount of the previous year.

The National Assembly must complete the first reading of the 2021 draft budget this weekend, before its solemn global vote on Tuesday and its passage before the Senate starting next Thursday.
